Today, on International Women’s Day, the International Commercial Law Alliance (ICLA) is proud to announce the launch of an important initiative aimed at understanding and addressing gender diversity challenges within the legal profession. The initiative, known as the ICLA Women – Special Interest Group (SIG), is spearheaded by members, iLaw from the UK and TIGGES Law Firm in Germany, under the leadership of Jenny Lau and Bahar Beyaz respectively.
Through the ICLA Women’s SIG, it is hoped that the initiative will cultivate an active community of female lawyers across the ICLA network, promoting dialogue, mentorship, and professional development. By establishing an informal yet confidential platform, the project invites female professionals from each member firm to share insights, concerns, and aspirations.
The initiative will also feature a series of events and seminars, both online and in-person, designed to engage clients, junior associates, and senior professionals. Among the pressing topics for discussion is the exploration of gender fairness and the aspirations of junior lawyers and legal trainees. This reflects a deep commitment to understanding and addressing the root causes of gender disparity in senior legal roles, moving beyond superficial solutions towards meaningful, systemic change.
Jenny Lau of iLaw and Bahar Beyaz of TIGGES Law Firm have invited all members of the ICLA community to join this vital conversation. “Our goal is to not only understand the challenges but to come up with solutions that make senior legal roles more attractive and accessible to women,” says Lau. “This goes beyond quotas; it’s about creating an environment where female lawyers can thrive and lead.”
The Executive Committee of ICLA, along with the full support of current ICLA president, Dr. Dominik Wagner L.L.M. (TIGGES), has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender diversity and empowering women within the legal profession. Through the ICLA Women SIG, the alliance aspires to create a more inclusive and equitable future for all members of the legal community.
